Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a major honors show nears, there’s always a demand for the addition of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and delight the passions of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences globally and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
