A minimum of 11 of the weather balloons, containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes, have now been retrieved

Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when numerous of them entered the national airspace.

Aviation Problems

The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.

National Security Measures

Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.

As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.

At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.

Regional Smuggling Pattern

Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."

To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.

Cross-Border Effects

Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.

Illegal Transport Methods

In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."

Law Enforcement Objectives

Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."

European Tensions

The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.

Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
