A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” declared the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term concluded the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its duties in public works. They were completed at an rapid pace, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party demanded an prompt pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been running in total adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
